Mission Statement

The Master’s program in Clinical and Counseling Psychology prepares students for the professional practice of counseling, assessment and mental health research. The curriculum provides a solid grounding in both theories and interventions that can be applied to a wide variety of mental health, academic and research settings. We emphasize professional competency, ethical responsibility, cultural competency, self-awareness, and current body of knowledge in the scientific, methodological and theoretical foundations of practice. Our program expects students to become compassionate and caring scientist-practitioners with motivation to continue learning and furthering their development throughout their professional careers. We are committed to social justice work and multiculturalism to better serve disadvantaged or marginalized groups in our society.

Program Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the Master of Arts in Counseling and Clinical Psychology program, students will:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of ethical, legal, and professional codes of conduct in the field of counseling and clinical psychology.

2. Demonstrate commitment to the values of empowerment, inclusivity, community engagement, and social justice in their clinical activities

3. Be able to integrate scientific knowledge and evidence-based theories of counseling and psychotherapy in their assessment and treatment of diverse clinical population clients.

4. Demonstrate self-reflexivity and self-awareness in their clinical practice.

5. Show knowledge and responsiveness to cultural and diversity factors in clinical practice.

6. Be able to explain how qualitative and quantitative research is conducted and how it guides and informs practice in counseling.

7. Demonstrate knowledge of empirically validated interventions in individual and group therapy, and career counseling.

8. Evidence knowledge relevant to standardized assessment in counseling and psychological practice at the master’s level. 

Students who complete the 60 credit hours required for the program and the 600 hours of supervised practice, will be prepared to begin the steps toward state licensure in professional counseling. All students will engage in professional development and continuing education regarding best practices in counseling throughout their professional career.
